Sodomy

Sodomy is typically defined as oral or anal sex between two people or as sexual activity between a person and a non-human animal (bestiality). Still, it can also refer to any sexual activity that does not result in the production of offsprings.

Sodomy” is an adopted English word, which represents the characteristics of the people that inhabited the city of Sodom and Gomorrah in the Bible.

What the Bible says about Sodomy

Biblically speaking, what is Sodomy? If you look at Genesis 19, it is when one man forcibly has anal sex with another man.

And they called unto Lot, and said unto him, Where are the men which came into thee this night? Bring them out unto us, that we may know them.

Genesis 19:5

For clarity, to “know them,” in this context, meant to have sexual immorality with them.

Even though the English word’s roots connect to Sodom’s immorality, sodomy is not the same as anal sex and is not mentioned in the Bible. Instead, it would refer to men forcibly having anal sex with other men – in other words, one man raping a fellow man.

In a broader sense, Sodomy could refer to all sorts of immorality practiced in Sodom, including homosexuality, whoremongering, prostitution, and rape. Sodomy then refers to both oral and anal sex concerning sex in marriage in modern usage.

According to the Bible, homosexuality is evil and unnatural sin that must be condemned (Leviticus 18:22; 20:13; Romans 1:26-27; 1 Corinthians 6:9). The Bible also vehemently condemns rape (Deuteronomy 22:25-27).

Therefore, it is evident that the Bible forbids Sodomy in the sense of male homosexual rape. But does the Bible forbid all forms of anal sex?

Anal Sex

In general, anal sex or anal intercourse involves the insertion and thrusting of the erect penis into a person’s anus, or the anus and rectum, for sexual pleasure.

Does the Bible talk about Anal Sex?

Not directly, but as an illustration, verse 5 of Genesis 19 contains the city of Sodom and Gomorrah’s most noteworthy moral transgression. Each time the Bible refers to anal sex, it is in the context of men engaging in male-male sexual activity.

And they called unto Lot, and said unto him, Where are the men which came into thee this night? Bring them out unto us, that we may know them.

Genesis 19:5

The act of having anal sex with your spouse while still married is not considered to be the sin of Sodom.

Anal sex is not precisely mentioned in the Bible. The ideas and knowledge included in the Bible’s pages can, however, be used to navigate many situations that are not explicitly covered in its pages, particularly those pertaining to God’s intentions when He created humans.

According to the Bible, the setting of appropriate sexual intercourse is defined as occurring between a man and a woman who are married to each other (1 Corinthians. 7:2). Next, you must comprehend that God not only created everything but also gave it a purpose. You can then conclude that the anus was not made for sex by applying this reality to anal sex.

Conclusion

Therefore, when attempting to denounce it as a sin from an expressly Biblical viewpoint, there are often two paths people take when talking about anal sex and the Bible.

The first is the reference to Sodom and Gomorrah in Genesis 19, and the second is the comparison of anal sex to homosexuality and the subsequent condemnation of the entire practice as immoral. They all essentially rest on the same reasoning, which is that anal sex is sinful simply because it is associated with other apparent sins.

Another strategy is to argue that it is medically risky and that doing it will hurt the body, which is the temple of God.

God forbids all types of male sexual intercourse, including manual intercourse, oral sex, and anal sex. But just because something is wrong with a man on man sex doesn’t mean that a husband’s behavior toward his wife in a marriage is also wrong.

The biblical and contemporary definitions of Sodomy are different from one another. Anal sex is Sodomy in the English sense of the word. Sodomy, as used in the Bible, refers to homosexual anal sex.
